Gustav Frenssen, Francis J. Reynolds A German Soldier in South West Africa. Recollections of the Herero Campaign 1903-1904-Peter M Journey to Africa by With a Short Account

The Herero campaign from the perspective of one of the invadersGermany’s late development as a modern nation meant it missed the opportunity to colonise the most desirable parts of the world. In the ‘scramble for Africa’ Germany managed to secure a foothold in the east of the continent and also in the west, in the region that is present day Namibia. This inhospitable and difficult country was, of course, already in the possession of several indigenous tribes including the Herero and Namaqua among others. German settlers instituted a policy of land grabbing which ignored the claims and possessions of the indigenous tribes and armed resistance inevitably broke out. The Germans responded ruthlessly with a policy of virtual extermination. The natives fought an effective guerrilla war with, at one point, up to 19,000 German troops engaged until the conclusion of operations in 1908. This book contains a very unusual account of a young volunteer soldier’s experience of this rarely described campaign of the early years of the twentieth century. Readers should note this is not an account from the Herero perspective. Appended to give historical context to this account is a short history of the campaign in South West Africa, 1915, during the First World War.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail band...

W. S. Rayner, OShaughnessy The Conquest of German South-West Africa, 1914-1915. A Comprehensive First-Hand Account and History by Two South African Correspondents

The war for colonial AfricaThis very substantial book, written by the two South African official correspondents on the campaign, narrates the expedition in 1914-15 which led to the conquest of German South-West Africa (the region now known as Namibia). One author accompanied the Northern Army and the other, the Southern Army. During the 19th century the great powers of Europe raced to establish themselves in all corners of the globe for colonisation, trade and political influence. In the 'great scramble for Africa,' the British and German empires had established themselves, by degrees, in the east and west of the continent. In the years before the outbreak of the First World War these colonies existed, more or less, in harmony but once hostilities erupted German and British settlers found themselves living in very close proximity to hostile forces. The British had the advantage of numbers since colonisation had long been a policy, though the Germans compensated for this measure with the abilities of their military commanders and the expertise and quality of their European and locally raised troops. (South Africa itself entered the fray, its forces led by commanders who a little over a decade earlier had led the Boer burghers in their attempts to form a nation independent of the British Empire.) This campaign of mobility was fought in the searing heat of a desert region and was often a 'tip and run affair' as mounted troops traversed huge tracts of inhospitable...

H. F. B. Walker, Arnold Wienholt Narratives of the Great War in Africa. Personal Experiences Two Soldiers East African . South West Campaigns First World

Two brilliant first hand accounts from the First World War in AfricaThe First World War in Africa has always been a subject of fascination for military historians. It involved regular British and German forces, unique and special corps on both sides, irregular units raised from colonials, Askaris and famous regiments such as the K. A. R. It drew adventurers from all over the world to action including men like F. C Selous and the outstanding German commander von Lettow (both of whom appear in these pages). It was fought in parched deserts and in bush terrain alive with dangerous wildlife. This 'two-in-one' Leonaur special edition will need little explanation to persuade aficionados of this subject that a real treat awaits them. The first account was written by a doctor of the Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance attached to the 3rd Mounted Brigade as part of Botha's German South-West African campaign. This was a mobile 'hit and run' war involving mounted riflemen, burghers of the commandos and, on the German side, the remarkable Camel Corps among others. The second narrative bears an unusual title. It refers to an actual lion hunt (which almost costs the author his life) but also to the German 'lions' of von Lettow's force. The action moves from German South West Africa, through the Okavango to East Africa where the author was employed as a scout, a free ranging intelligence officer waging a guerrilla war in the bush and as a member of the East Afric...

Moore Ritchie, J. P. Kay Robinson Two Views of the South-West Africa Campaign 1914-15. With Botha in Field: Recollections B Bodyguard Troop by Ritchie . with

Imperial horse soldiers at warWhen the First World War broke out in the summer of 1914, the eyes of the world turned towards the great events which were unfolding in Europe as the Imperial German Army swept across Belgium and France and the allied armies of France, Belgium and the British B.E.F retreated towards Paris. This was, however, a truly global conflict which would also embrace the colonies of all the warring nations. In eastern and western Africa, British and German colonists found themselves on different sides and hostilities immediately broke out over terrain that was wild, difficult to traverse and inhabited by dangerous animals. In the west, Germany occupied the country now known as Namibia-a dry, barren desert landscape that favoured neither army. The outset of this campaign was complicated by a doomed rebellion by radical Boers who sought to ally themselves with the German cause in hopes of regaining some of the autonomy lost as a consequence of the Anglo-Boer War concluded a decade or more previously. Eventually, an expeditionary force was mounted under the command of former Boer leader Louis Botha (now a British army general) which was transported by sea to the German colony. This Leonaur Original book contains two first hand accounts by soldiers who served and fought in German South-West Africa; the first, by a former South African policeman who became a member of Botha's Mounted Bodyguard and the second an account of the activities of the Imperial Light...

Todd Meyers The Ways We Stretch Toward One Another. Thoughts on Anthropology through the Work of Pamela Reynolds

The Ways We Stretch Toward One Another is a collection of essays on the work of Pamela Reynolds. The essays take cues from Reynolds’ decades-long contributions to the field of anthropology in different ways. The authors weave Reynolds’ groundbreaking scholarship on the anthropology of childhood––of labour, of family, of resistance, justice, war and suffering––through the terms of their own work, in places and contexts that may at first appear quite distant from the villages of Zimbabwe and townships of South Africa that feature in Reynolds’ ethnographies. The Ways We Stretch Toward One Another is about anthropologists stretching in thought and practice toward one another, between generations, toward the people encountered in the field, through worlds entered and past, and how, in turn, these worlds lean into our own. At the core of each essay is a question about how we learn, how we pass lessons on, how we assume the mantle of anthropology for understanding the contemporary world––something that often requires folding intellectual friendships into the tools of our practice. The Ways We Stretch Toward One Another demonstrates how a master anthropologist has come to shape the priorities of others, in terms that are both creative and aware.Contributors: Thomas Cousins, Stefanos Geroulanos, Todd Meyers, Pamela Reynolds, Fiona Ross, and Vaibhav Saria; and a Foreword by Francis B. John Buchan The First World War in Africa 1914-1918. Togoland, South-West Africa, the Cameroons . East

A unique assessment of the Great War in sub-Saharan Africa in all its theatresThe great conflict fought between 1914 and 1918 set Europe ablaze, but, as the definition of ‘world war’ implies, embraced battlefields where the colonial interests of the protagonist nations inevitably collided. How this occurred on the continent of Africa has always fascinated military history students of the period, not least because these campaigns unconfined by the stagnation of trench warfare, as was the case on the Western Front, were fought over exotic terrains by national, militia and native forces often commanded by able and imaginative officers on both sides. Much focus has been given to the campaigns in East Africa, which features in detail in this book, but also included is the campaign fought in the arid landscape of South-West Africa (now Namibia) and those which took place in Equatorial Togoland (Ghana Volta) and The Cameroons in West Africa. The ‘South African Rebellion’ is also described. The author of this book, John Buchan, a writer of great talent and economy of phrase, was primarily known for his superlative adventure fiction. However, he was commissioned to write a multi-volume history of the First World War which enabled him to reveal his talent as an historian and from which this single volume edition has been selectively edited. Buchan’s text, appearing in this form for the first time in this Leonaur edition, includes many excellent maps and has been further enhanced by pho...

Vusi Gumede Political Economy of Post-apartheid South Africa

The book, made up of three parts, covers a wide spectrum of political economy issues on post-apartheid South Africa. Although the text is mainly descriptive, to explain various areas of the political economy of post-apartheid South Africa, the first and the last parts provide illuminating insights on the kind of society that is emerging during the twenty-one years of democracy in the country. The book discusses important aspects of the political history of apartheid South Africa and the evolution of post-apartheid society, including an important recap of the history of southern Africa before colonialism. The text is a comprehensive description of numerous political economy phenomena since South Africa gained its political independence and covers some important themes that have not been discussed in detail in other publications on post-apartheid South Africa. The book also updates earlier work of the author on policy and law making, land and agriculture, education and training as well as on poverty and inequality in post-apartheid South Africa thereby providing a wide-ranging overview of the socio-economic development approaches followed by the successive post-apartheid administrations. Interestingly, three chapters focus on various aspects of the post-apartheid South African economy: economic policies, economic empowerment and industrial development. Through the lens of the notion of democratic developmental state and taking apartheid colonialism as a point of departure, the ...

Ali A. Mazrui A Tale of Two Africas. Nigeria and South Africa as Contrasting Visions

Nigeria and South Africa provide the socioeconomic and political contrasts in the African condition. Some of these contrasts can be demonstrated in the following dialectics: Nigeria is the Africa of human resources, South Africa is a land of mineral resources; Nigeria is repellant to European settlement; South Africa is a magnet for such settlement; Nigeria is a mono-racial society, South Africa is a multiracial society; Nigeria is grappling with the politics of religion, South Africa's is pre-occupied with the politics of secularism; Nigeria is Africa's largest exporter of oil, South Africa is Africa's largest consumer of oil; Nigeria is a paradigm of indigenization, South Africa is a paragon of Westernization. Building on these contrasts, Professor Ali Mazrui, master of the dialectical approach to socio-political analysis, demonstrates how the two most influential countries between the Niger and the Cape of Good Hope are alternative faces of Africa. _______________________Professor Ali Mazrui needs no introduction to any student of African politics. Recently nominated as one of the 100 greatest living public intellectuals in the world by the Washington-based journal, Foreign Policy, Professor Mazrui is the author of more than twenty books and hundreds of articles published all over the world. He was the author and narrator of the highly regarded television series The Africans: A Triple Heritage (BBC/PBS, 1986). He is currently Director of the Institute of Global...

An Ex C. M. R. A Cape Mounted Rifleman. Four Years. Service in South Africa During the Kaffir Wars, 1877-1881

Troopers in green on the veldtAfter a period of service in West Africa, the author of this interesting book, finding himself at a loose end, decided to enlist as a policeman in South Africa. Much to his annoyance, and that of many of his fellow recruits, he soon found himself declared to be a soldier instead-as a trooper of the Cape Mounted Rifles. In the late 1870s relationships between the European settlers of the Cape and the indigenous Kaffir tribes were once again coming to a head as the tribes felt the force of impending doom for their way of life and the inevitable loss of ownership of their traditional lands that would follow. The author saw four turbulent years of service on the Cape frontier engaged on campaign and in outright battle that was as savage and uncompromising as any of the period. This book is a vital first hand account for anyone interested in these riveting events. Recommended. Available in soft and hard cover.

Ignatius Mabula The Relationship Between the South African Foreign Policy and Millenium Recovery Plan

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: The relationship between South Africa and MAP emanates from South Africa's Foreign policy which advanced: Promotion of justice, democracy and human rights as well as prosperity and security achieved through economic development. South Africa's philosophy of African Renaissance directed at rejuvenating and renewing Africa transforms the continent into an arena of peace, security and stability, was blended into MAP. Economically, South Africa's adoption of neo-liberal policies in MAP were encouraged by South Africa's incorporation of neo-liberal visions in MAP and have been influenced by the country's adoption of Growth, Equity and Redistribution (GEAR) in 1996. GEAR became the macro-economic framework for all policies of the government whose aim was to make South Africa the preferred destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as well as allowing the country to occupy a comfortable position in the rapidly globalising world. However, MAP has been grappling with numerous challenges and its dependency underpinning. These challenges include structural, endogenous and exogenous factors which continue to constrain Africa's endeavours. This paper focuses on the relationship between South African foreign policy and MAP. The paper explores foundations and the evolution of South African foreign policy datin...

Ilana Mercer Into the Cannibals Pot. Lessons for America from Post-Apartheid South Africa

Into the Cannibal's Pot: Lessons for America from post-Apartheid South Africa is a polemical work anchored in history, reality, fact, and the political philosophy of classical liberalism. It is a manifesto against mass society, arguing against raw, ripe, democracy, here (in the US), there (in South Africa), and everywhere. Into the Cannibal's Pot follows Russell Kirk's contention that true freedom can be found only within the framework of a social order. It is a reminder that, however imperfect, civilized societies are fragile. They can, and will, crumble in culturally inhospitable climes. The tyranny of political correctness, so unique to the West plays a role in their near-collapse. Advanced societies don't just die; they either wither from within, or, like South Africa, are finished off by other western societies. Ilana Mercer delivers a compelling book; it is required reading for thinking people who care about the destiny of western civilization.

Renzo Baas Fictioning Namibia as a Space of Desire. An Excursion into the Literary During Colonialism, Apartheid and Liberation Struggle

Modern-day Namibian history has largely been shaped by three major eras: German colonial rule, South African apartheid occupation, and the Liberation Struggle. It was, however, not only military conquest that laid the cornerstone for the colony, but also how the colony was imagined, the “dream” of this colony. As a tool of discursive worldmaking, literature has played a major role in providing a framework in which to “dream” Namibia, first from outside its borders, and then from within. In Fictioning Namibia as a Space of Desire, Renzo Baas employs Henri Lefebvre‘s city-countryside dialectic and reworks it in order to uncover how fictional texts played an integral part in the violent acquisition of a foreign territory.Through the production of myths around whiteness, German and South African authors designed a literary space in which control, destruction, and the dehumanisation of African peoples are understood as a natural order, one that is dictated by history and its linear continuation. These European texts are offset by Namibia’s first novel by an African, offering a counter-narrative to the colonial invention that was (German) South West Africa.

Tobias Erbert The emerging black middle class in South Africa and its relation to democracy

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: 19 years after the promising democratic change in South Africa, the countrieschallenges and disparities remain ubiquitous. The huge majority of black South Africansstill lives in poverty, inequality has grown since the end of apartheid, service delivery isa permanent problem and democratic institutions are at least partly weak (Holden2012: 95).However, the new South Africa is not only signified by the aggravation of disparities.Over the last years, the emergence of a black middle class became steadily moretangible and is today a mostly undisputed phenomenon (Schrire 2005: 271; Southall2004: 539; Everatt 2011: 79). Some research has been conducted especially todetermine definition criteria and the size of a black middle class (Rivero et al. 2003;Southall 2004; Visagie, Posel 2011; Phadi, Ceruti 2011). The total middle class in SouthAfrica included 29% black South Africans in 1994, while until 2011, their share hadgrown to 49.8% of the total middle class (Holden 2012: 226-227). In absolute numbers, the black middle class made up five million people in 2011 (Visagie, Posel 2011: 8, 17)while South Africa had a total black population of around 41 million people (StatisticsSA 2011). Hence, approximately 8.2% of the black population group belongs to theblack middle class.Although there is research discussing the size...

Maseabata Rose Mary Molefe Teacher Professionalism in South Africa

Over the past decade South Africa has developed a comprehensive set of policies in the field of education with a view to transforming education in such a way that ideal of quality education for all could become a reality. Transformation of education was intertwined with the process of reviewing teacher education in South Africa. In response to educational changes, teacher educators developed and implemented innovative strategies to train professional teachers. However, teacher education is been criticized for over-emphasizing theoretical rather than the practical strategic actions that novice teachers require. This book pursues arguments related to teacher education in South Africa. The book presents a case study of the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme at the University of Pretoria. The analysis has important implications for teacher education and also has relevance for discussions on what is meant by teacher competence in South Africa.
